Orange Shirt Day

Thank you to those who took the time to comment on the Universe in a Box homework assignment. The questions we have investigated so far in our science unit:

  • Why does the sun rise and set?
  • Who set the first clock?
  • Why do the stars change with the seasons?
Our next field trip to the HR MacMillan Space Centre will be on October 26. Thank you to those who have already let me know if you are able to drive for that field trip. We have booked the Planet Mechanics workshop and the Planetarium presentation: Our Closest Neighbour.

Over the last two weeks, we have been discussing residential schools in order to prepare students for our school's first orange shirt day assembly. This is a difficult topic and we wanted to have the students focus on the resilience of First Peoples. We also wanted students to recognize the strength of Indigenous peoples. To wrap up our learning, we read students a book called I know I am Precious and Sacred  by Debora Abood. After reading the story, we put students into mixed groups and assigned them each a part of the story to create movements. With only two sessions to create their movements, we had students rehearse and perform their parts as a group Thursday in the gym. It was an incredibly moving activity and students showed great thoughtfulness in their participation. I am super proud of them!

On Friday, we spent much of our day creating a piece of visual art to represent that Every Child Matters. Here is a sneak peek at the finished results:

We have been focusing on place value in math - representing numbers through standard form, word form, picture form and expanded form. Having a strong sense of numbers and how our number system works is foundational for all aspects of math - you can help your child by ensuring that they are comfortable counting forwards and backwards easily from multiple starting points.

In Health, we are learning about Growth Mindset. We are learning about how the brain builds connections while learning. This week we focus on the difference between a Fixed mindset vs. Growth mindset.
