Welcome back! I hope that everyone enjoyed two weeks off.
We are back to work in our classroom. Our geometry math quiz is tomorrow. Students have been learning about two-dimensional shapes. They have learned to identify shapes by name and determine the number of sides and vertices. We discovered a pattern with the number of sides equalling the number of vertices (triangle=3 sides, 3 vertices). Before the break, we created symmetrical pictures using pattern blocks. This week we have been practicing identifying symmetrical shapes and determining the number of lines of symmetry. We also learned about congruency (same size, shape, angles) and right angles (check if the angle is like the corner of a square). Students should be bringing home their JUMP workbooks, a review booklet, and a study sheet. We went over the concepts today in class to prepare for tomorrow's quiz!
I have been asking students to collect recyclables for creating a musical instrument for our Sound unit in science. Many students have informed me that they have already made their instruments! Love the enthusiasm. Look for the project criteria which will be sent home soon (probably early next week). This week we investigated how sound travels by using Slinky's and tuning forks. Next, we will be investigating volume and pitch. If you have any empty glass milk bottles we could use, I would love to borrow 5 of them for a fun science investigation!
In writing, we had a lot of fun writing in the role of a character from a book, By the Side of the Road, by Jules Pfeiffer. Students had to try and capture the voice of the character in their writing. Then I read snippets to the class and they had to identify which character it was.
