Potpourri of Poetry

One of my favourite units to teach in writing is poetry. We have been exploring what poetry is, where it hides, and doors to poetry. On Wednesday, we will be writing about an everyday object in a poetic way. Students are collecting an anthology of original poems. Here is just a sampling:

Air

How busy is air?
Air dances with the leaves.
It sways to the beat of the rat-a-tat squirrel
Pushes the flag to its full extent.
Dives into the water and creates ripples.
Flies through your hair.
A seaweed forest
Rests in the sun for a while
Then has lunch at the old fir tree
Walks to the old church and...
Begins its way home.
So..
How busy is air?

Pencil

In the classroom lies
a pencil as sharp as the
Empire State Building
Ouch!

Cloud

Floating in the
Shadow of the
Night or day.

Windows

Behind every window there
Is something exciting.

Clock

A clock  tick-tocks like
a song and when the
clock strikes an hour the
song ends and a new one
starts. Tick-tock bling!

Mountain

A mountain
Rises over the
Earth like the key
to the next world.

Vent

Poetry blends with
the dusty air
travels with
the twinkle of
light.
