Minds at Work!

We have a science quiz on Tuesday. I worked with the students to create a study sheet (which they should be bringing home today) containing key concepts and vocabulary. It also gives a short description of the different experiments we did. Students are working on creating a project called a "Lap Book" which shows their understanding of the key concepts about light. Next up is sound. You can start setting aside any recyclables which we can use to create our own music instruments!

In social studies, we are learning how traditional First Nations groups used fishing technologies. Students are being asked to bring in a small box (cereal box size) to create a diorama of one of the technologies we read about. They are learning about note taking using key words and identifying the main idea.

Every day this week we are having a practice quiz in multiplication. Grade 4 students have brought home their sheet to do a home practice as well. They should remember to bring it back for Tuesday's math class. Grade 3's are only being asked to begin memorization of facts up to 5 X 5 although they can use their fingers and skip count to find the answers. Today we found some really neat patterns in the 8 times tables to help us remember them. Our final quiz is on Thursday.

Check out the photos page for pictures of a few "Hot off the Press" books that we have published during Free Write Fridays. Almost all students have now shared one project with the class - with the last few students aiming to complete their projects in the next two weeks. This week we are having an in-class writing assignment. Students looked at a rubric for Organization today. With their table partners, they had to evaluate a piece of writing and give it a score. They will be using the rubric to mark their own work this time. You can check in with your child to see if they have an idea for a topic (their choice of fiction or nonfiction).
