Thank you so much to all of you for your support during student-led conferences. It was great to see such a wonderful turnout and the students were very proud to share their work with you.
Our science unit on States of Matter and Solubility is continuing. We finished experimenting with liquids, and are just beginning to look at chemical changes. Students are becoming familiar with the scientific method (question, hypothesize, experiment, observe and record, analyze, and draw conclusions), and especially the importance of controlling variables.
We are well into our final unit in Social Studies. This unit focuses on the impact of colonization and the fur trade on First Peoples of BC and Canada. We have been able to start using our new socials textbooks which have a much better representation of the perspective of First Peoples in Canada. Students should be submitting their powerful inquiry questions on Monday, May 14 for feedback and beginning to search for authentic sources of information.
April was National Poetry month, and we enjoyed a brief unit on writing poetry. Students explored elements of poetry such as similes, metaphors, and personification, while also thinking about aspects of writing poetry such as word choice, repetition, and line breaks.
In French, we have been learning to communicate about our families. Students have built a repertoire of basic vocabulary which they can now use to create sentences (written and verbal). They are also getting a lot of practice speaking and reading French.
Our math unit on 2-D geometry wrapped up. This unit contained a lot of math vocabulary which always poses a challenge for students. Many students will need more time and practice to familiarize themselves with concepts such as symmetry, congruency, parallel lines, right angles, and vertices. We are now exploring fractions!
