Projects, Quizzes, and Learning

I just want to start by thanking all those who contributed to the water fundraiser. This initiative was put forward by the Humanitarian club at Wolfe with a goal of $150 per class, which would be enough for a water well in a country with the highest needs. Our class exceeded our goal and raised $185! Thank you!

We are having a place value quiz tomorrow. Today we reviewed the concepts which will be covered and students were invited to make study notes. Concepts to review are:

  • place and value (the place a number is in determines its value)
  • representing numbers through STANDARD form, WORD form, EXPANDED form (numerals only or numerals and words), and PICTURE/MODEL form
  • comparing numbers (differences of 1, 10, 100, 1000, or 10 000) and using the greater than or less (> <) than signs
  • ordering numbers from least to greatest
  • regrouping
  • addition and subtraction (grade 4's to 10 000 and grade 5's to 100 000)
We have started our first project in science. This project is being done in partnerships and in-class. Students chose either an inquiry into a body system or a health challenge. They are just finishing up research and note-taking today. After that, they will begin putting together posters with their information. This project integrates our focus on reading for information and using text features to present information. It also connects our science learning with health. As well, it provides students with extra writing practice. The posters will be shared in the classroom during the final week of school.

We are currently writing adventure stories. This writing assignment gives students additional practice using transition words. It also gives them their first opportunity (besides Free Write) to write from their imagination pocket.

In social studies, we have begun looking at Jacques Cartier and his three voyages to North America. We are using the lens of perspective as we read and discuss concepts. At the beginning of our unit, we have identified three reasons for exploration:
  1. Trade for silk and spices
  2. Find new lands
  3. Convert people to Christianity
After our last lesson, we revisited this list and revised it to the following:
  1. Trade for silk and spices
  2. Find Claim new lands
  3. Convert people to Christianity
  4. Find a Northwest Passage
Please note:
Division 6 will not be participating in the winter concert. Look for us in spring!
