And we're back!

Our poor classroom blog has suffered from neglect during term two! So here are a couple of fun updates to get you in the "know" about what's going on in Division 7 this term.

This week we started a poetry writing unit. We are learning about the 3 R's of poetry: rhythm, repetition, and risk. Already, I love some of the poems being written. Here is a recitation of a favourite Shel Silverstein poem that got a chuckle out of everyone (including the teacher):

Today we enjoyed writing little odes to something we love, only this time, we wrote graffiti style, with everyone gathered around a long roll of paper at the carpet. It was a fun way to write, created some great collaboration and conversation, and we had fun sharing our favourites out loud!

In science, we have been learning about biomes. To introduce our unit and the concept of a biome, students have been learning some simple facts about four biomes in British Columbia. We have learned that biomes are places that have similar weather (precipitation and temperature), animals and plants.

Social Studies has started off with a fun project. Student feedback was that they enjoyed the creativity and flexibility of this project, while learning and collaborating. I also loved the fact that students were reviewing note-taking, researching, and putting together a simple PowerPoint presentation, all while engaged in learning about our nation's capital.

We have started a new class read aloud called An Elephant in the Garden by Michael Morpurgo. This is a moving piece of historical fiction that has students asking a lot of questions.

Our new math focus is on fractions. So far, we have reviewed naming fractions, the vocabulary of fractions (numerator, denominator), and fractions as part of a whole or a set. This week we are learning about mixed and improper fractions.

We are looking forward to our Open House on Wednesday, April 12. Feel free to drop in at whatever time works best for you - don't forget to bring students with you as they will be sharing a few key pieces of work with you (mostly from Term 2). You don't need to RSVP for this event. Note: there will be several families in the room, so this is not the time to discuss personal concerns about your child. I will be contacting families for separate conferences if there is a need to meet.
