Setting Goals

It was great to have a chance to sit down and discuss your child's learning goals at the goal-setting conferences. On Friday, I sent home the support plan which we completed together during the conference. As of today, I can see that many students are already working hard towards their math goals. Our class usage has improved greatly in the last two weeks. I have included some information from Reflex math that you may find of interest.

Math fact fluency
"The goal of Reflex is fact fluency. By “fluency” we mean that a student is able to retrieve the correct answers to facts from memory almost instantly. A student who needs to stop and think about the answer to a math fact isn’t fluent with that fact, even if she eventually arrives at the correct answer.

Is it important that students are able to answer facts this quickly? According to the research, yes! Multiple studies have shown that students who can automatically recall math facts are more capable problem solvers, learn new math skills more quickly, and are more likely to succeed in their future mathematics courses. The NCTM, NationalMath Advisory Panel, and other major educational organizations highlight math fact fluency as a central pillar of every student’s mathematics education."

"When planning for Reflex, keep in mind that shorter, more frequent sessions will be more effective than longer, less frequent sessions."

If you are interested to learn more about how Reflex works, go to www.reflexmath.com/research. Parents can also set up an account to monitor their child's progress.

Our class is currently 74% fluent. We have nine students who have already mastered addition and subtraction facts. Eight more students are at 90% fluency or above.

Language Arts
In writing, we are working on using a variety of transition words and triple scoop words (words that are more interesting than fun, good, nice). Our daily independent reading time is now up to 28 minutes daily. Students should be reading daily for 15-20 minutes at home as well. We have started a new read aloud called Fish in a Tree. The genre is realistic fiction and allows for students to make connections and to learn how to make inferences.

Health & Career Education
We have just finished the BE ACTIVE EVERYDAY challenge. We spent the last week following up on goal-setting conferences by creating a desk reminder card with pictures/words to help students remember one or more of their goals. This week we will be talking more about the Brain and learning what it means to have a growth mindset.

Physical Education (PE)
We are well into our volleyball unit. Students have been learning to set and bump correctly. Next up is learning how to serve!

Math
We have begun a place value unit. To begin with, we are looking at our base 10 number system and understanding how the place of a number determines its value. Students will be learning to represent numbers in a variety of ways: standard form (924), word form (nine hundred twenty-four), picture form (9 hundreds, 2 tens, 4 ones), and expanded form (900 + 20 + 4).
