Students need to bring an empty 1L plastic bottle to class on Wednesday for our science lesson. We are going to be making a model of the lungs.
Health and Career Education:
Our class is participating in the Be Active Everyday challenge along with 32 other schools in the province of BC. Your child should have brought home a poster with the numbers 5-2-1-0. See if they can explain what each of these numbers mean. We will be focusing on this program for our Health and Career Education unit this term. Watch the first week's video below and see if you can incorporate the challenge into your home life.
Week 1: Fruits and Veggies
Language Arts:
This week we are learning that good writers give facts followed by details to make their writing more interesting. Students will be completing a piece of writing about themselves. We are in the middle of a great read aloud called Seven Dead Pirates. This is a great fantasy novel. Students are also working on building up their reading stamina for independent reading (also called DEAR). We are currently able to read for 20 minutes as a class, with everyone focused on their books, reading, and staying in one place.
French:
We are starting to learn the days of the week, how to say the date in french, and how to respond to a few simple questions daily. Students are also completing a title page for their binders.
Science:
We have started our human body unit with a look at the digestive system. Students have learned that there are several organs that work together as part of this system (esophagus, stomach, small and large intestine). Last week, we completed an experiment using crackers and lemon juice in a baggy to better understand what happens in our stomach. Today we used two different visuals to understand the relative size of the digestive system (ribbon to understand the length of the digestive system and a raisin to understand how small cells are).
Fine Arts:
Our first art project is complete. We created a drawing to show an understanding of composition and value. Students drew a large pumpkin or gourd that was off-centre and went off the page. Then they coloured it with pencil crayons, blending light and dark colours.
