Projects, Quizzes, and Reminders

Students are bringing home their social studies duotangs with criteria for their final project. They were given three periods in class to locate information about the culture of a country of their choice. This final project is a simple presentation of 3 - 5 minutes, giving students an opportunity to show their understanding of another country's culture and to demonstrate respect for learning about different cultures.

Criteria:
  • create a poster or a PowerPoint presentation
  • Include at least 2 pictures
  • Provide information in the following areas
    • Facts about the country: flag, population, climate, currency, capital city
    • Facts about the culture: language, traditional foods and dress, and celebrations
  • Provide a map showing the country and what continent it is on
  • Optional: may use a fact box to display small/quick facts
We would like students to be ready to present this project either Wednesday, November 7 or Tuesday, November 13. Please check with Mrs. Prosser, our student teacher,  if you have specific questions about the project. Please Note: As there seemed to be confusion around this project, we have decided to work with students in class next week and provide more direction for completing this assignment. Students should return their posters and social studies duotangs to school by Monday!

We had a very short math quiz today for our Place Value unit. There is a lot of information in this unit and I don't want students to have one large test at the end where they have to recall information we did weeks ago. So I have broken down the unit into smaller chunks which allows me to use the quiz as an ongoing assessment tool. Because there was a very short turn around for this quiz, I gave students a practice quiz in class which was identical in format to the actual quiz (except with different numbers) and we used the remainder of the math period to go over questions and review concepts covered so far.

Here are some tips for helping your child to study:
  • check his/her workbook for errors and create a few practice problems
  • look over the review sheets, practice quizzes or materials sent home and give your child a few practice problems
  • ask your child to explain key concepts in his/her own words
Reminders:
  •  Please return JUMP math workbooks to school tomorrow!
  • We are collecting donations for the Food Bank.
