This week we are beginning our unit on Nutrition in Health and Career Education. We will be using a program called Food Sense by the BC Dairy Foundation. On Tuesday, students will be bringing home a food record to track the food they eat over 3 days. They are only required to write down the foods they eat. Please do not fill in the serving sizes in the corresponding food group columns. We will do that together as a class during a later lesson. Students are also being asked to complete a 3-day physical activity record over the three days as well. Please return these to school by Tuesday, October 19.
The Food Sense program teaches students about the recommended number of servings for each food group. They will also learn how to determine serving sizes. Finally, they will be asked to analyze their food records, set a realistic goal, and make a plan to achieve that goal.
We have had a slow start in regularly scheduled PE classes which seem to have fallen on a large number of closure days (professional days, holidays and district closure days). We will supplement our PE on those weeks with additional indoor/outdoor activities. Our first few classes in the gym have focused on following directions, participation, and getting our heart rates elevated. This week we are learning to play a new group game called Moss Ball.
On Monday afternoons, we will be having a regular class meeting. This is a time for students to take an active role in the success of the classroom. We begin with bouquets. This is an opportunity for each child to recognize an individual or a group with a compliment. Then we discuss a class goal which is chosen by the class. Finally, we discuss any items added to our agenda. Often these are items brought forward by students. It is a great way to learn about problems and solutions. Class meeting also allows students to develop further leadership opportunities as each student will take a turn as Co-chair of the meeting and Secretary during the year.

Hey,
I'm interning in Grade 8 this semester and we have a class blog. I didn't realize until now that you do as well. I don't know if your kids have blogs as well, but if you ever want to send your kids over to visit my class blog (my kids all blog on their own interests and are trying to build a learning community) that would be awesome. And if you have your kids blogging, I can get mine to do the same. Thanks
Jon Thiessen
